Trying Oxygen Therapy at the Merlin Centre

Trying Oxygen Therapy at the Merlin Centre

On Monday, 8th September, I was lucky enough to be invited to try oxygen therapy at the Merlin Centre in St Austell. I only found out about the centre thanks to the kindness of a friend, whose girlfriend had been attending and found real relief from her symptoms.

When you live with an ongoing condition, as I do, you accept that some medications are essential—they are life-saving. But there’s always a longing for something that supports healing more gently, something that might ease symptoms and improve quality of life. That’s what drew me to oxygen therapy.

What Is Oxygen Therapy?

Oxygen therapy involves breathing high concentrations of oxygen inside a pressurised chamber. The pressure allows more oxygen to be absorbed into the bloodstream, delivering it deep into tissues to support healing and repair.

Normally, the air we breathe provides enough oxygen for metabolism and minor tissue repair. But, with disease or injury, damaged blood vessels can restrict oxygen supply to tissues. Therapy increases oxygen concentration in the blood, restoring balance and supporting recovery.

Why I Wanted to Try It

For me, the reasons were clear:

To ease the heaviness in my body and limbs. To reduce chronic fatigue. To help counter some of the side effects of long-term medication. To calm inflammation and support my immune system. To encourage my body to accept my transplanted liver with less “anger” or attack.

Other Reasons People Try Oxygen Therapy

Everyone’s story is different, but other reasons people seek this therapy include:

Neurological support – easing brain fog, fatigue, or symptoms from MS, stroke, or traumatic brain injury.

Immune system regulation – reducing inflammation that underpins many chronic conditions.

Cell repair and regeneration – especially after injury or surgery.

Improved brain clarity – better focus and concentration.

Mood and well-being – some people report feeling calmer, lighter, or more hopeful. Longevity and prevention – strengthening the body against future flare-ups.

My Hopes Going Forward

Over the next two months, I’m aiming to complete 20 sessions to see the full effect. Healing is not always easy to measure, so I plan to track my progress with:

The Wim Hof breathing app to monitor how my breath-hold time improves. Personal notes on energy, clarity, and mood shifts. Reflections on symptoms linked to my medication.

This isn’t about chasing miracles. It’s about giving my body the best chance to heal, finding more ease, and reducing the weight of symptoms that I’ve carried for too long.
