How My Assistance Dog Is Helping Me Reclaim My Life
🌫 When Illness Is Invisible, but Life-Altering
I cannot count the number of times my own body has threatened my life.
There have been moments when my medication left me faint, nauseous, or completely disoriented—so fogged by confusion that I could not remember where I was, or how to speak. The simplest actions became impossible. And with stress, everything worsens.
These episodes—though invisible to the outside world—are terrifying. Layered on top are the mental health struggles: anxiety attacks, claustrophobia, overheating, disassociation. Things many people never have to think about. For me, they are part of daily life.
🐶 A Realisation That Changed Everything
In the midst of all this, one day a realisation hit me like a wave of hope:
I could have an assistance dog.
I have always loved dogs. Growing up with them gave me a sense of comfort and stability that no pill ever could. Dogs offer something rare—unconditional presence. And for someone who lives with fluctuating energy, unpredictable symptoms, and deep internal stress, that kind of steady companionship can be life-changing.
🧠 Beyond Medication: A Different Kind of Support
Assistance dogs are not just about mobility or service. They can help with invisible illnesses—mental health conditions, autoimmune diseases, neurological struggles, and fatigue.
Think of how many people are on medication for depression or anxiety. These medications can be powerful, but they can also come with harsh side effects. What if there was another tool—one that offered emotional regulation, physical grounding, and unconditional love?
For me, my dog is that tool. Just like EFT (tapping), reiki, rest, nutrition, and breathwork, assistance dogs are part of a larger healing ecosystem. A living, breathing reminder that you are not alone in your body.
🐕 Meet Coco: My Assistance Dog in Training
Coco is still young—just two years old—but she is already showing immense promise.
Yes, she has a zest for life and loves exploring new things. But the moment I put on her assistance dog vest, she transforms. There is a shift. She knows she is working. And in that moment, a calm focus settles in.
When I am feeling faint or emotionally overwhelmed, Coco instinctively comes to my side. She nestles between my legs, places her head gently on me, and just stays. It is like she senses the storm before I speak. She is alert, steady, and tuned in to my state in ways I never expected from a dog so young.
💡 Why Assistance Dogs Matter
Coco has already changed the way I move through the world. She is giving me back access to spaces I used to avoid. She is helping me reduce stress and regulate myself without medication.
And here is the thing: Assistance dogs are not just for others. They can be for you, too.
You do not need to wait for a charity to choose you or fund a full-time trainer (though those options are wonderful when available). Thanks to brilliant organisations like Adolescent Dogs, the dream of training your own assistance dog is becoming more accessible than ever.
🖥 A Training Option You Should Know About
Adolescent Dogs offer online video training programmes specifically designed for people who want to train their own assistance dogs. Their resources are compassionate, professional, and incredibly helpful. You can learn at your own pace, from home, with your dog beside you every step of the way.
I will write a full post soon about my experience with their programme—but for now, just know this:
If you live with a condition that is keeping you inside, isolating you from the world, or making it hard to trust your body…
You do not have to do this alone.
There is support. And sometimes, it has four legs, a wagging tail, and a whole lot of love.
🌟 In Summary
Coco is not just a pet.
She is becoming my lifeline, my early warning system, my safe place.
And I believe with all my heart that assistance dogs like her could be part of a healthier, more supported future for so many of us.
If you are open to it—if there is even a small voice inside saying maybe this could work for me—please listen to it.
Healing does not always come in a bottle.
Sometimes, it walks beside you on a lead
